Russ Hersey Wins Mike Brousseau Memorial Race At Twin State Speedway

Claremont,N.H.- Many familiar faces from the past showed up for the Mike Brousseau Memorial Pro Stock 125 at Twin State Speedway Sunday night. Fan favorites such as veterans Punky Caron, Bucky Demers, Roger Raymond and Jim Boniface were all on hand just to name a few.

The race, Sponsored by ASETEX Tire & Auto was split into 3 segments of 50,50 and 25 laps. Heat races were run to determine the starting order and Demers and Caron were the winners putting them on the front row of the first segment. The Cornish Comet #26 (Demers) bolted to the front with the Goshen Ghost 1G (Caron) right on his tail and the duo battled nose to tail and side by side for 14 laps until the caution flew as Adam LaPoint #46 spun in turn 4.

Demers again took control on the restart but on lap 21 Russ Hersey #88 and Bill Kimball #43 got together in turn 3 to bring out another yellow. On this restart Caron would use the high groove to his advantage and take over the lead bringing Bryon Baker #11 along with him. Demers hung tough on the outside but would loose another position to Rob Goodenough on lap 30. The next 20 laps ran caution free with Caron winning the segment followed by the rest of the top 10, Baker, Goodenough, Demers, Bob MaCarthur, Hersey, Zig Geno, Boniface, Aric Blanchette and Tom Canfield.

The Super Street 50 lapper was next on tap while the Pro Stockers made adjustments in the pits. Heat winners Mark McClay #15 and Dan Frederick #44 (who had clinched Monadnocks point title one night earlier) made up the front row. McClay blasted to the front at the drop of the green with Frederick being hung out to dry on the outside allowing Ricky Bly #28 and Adam Bates #98 to slide by. On lap 9, rookie Richard Marsh III spun on the front chute bringing out the first caution of the event. On the restart McClay again got the jump and started distancing himself from the pack until lap 38 when Bly and Bates got together in turn 2 while dealing with lapped cars. On the final restart McClay took control for good racing to the checkers with Frederick, David Bly, Earl Moul and Bates rounding out the top 5.

Super Street 50 top 10: Mark McClay #15, Dan Frederick #44, David Bly #29, Earl Moul #11, Andy Breen #98, Colby Hodgdon #02, Ron Menard #10, John Lavioe #47, Ricky Bly #28, Jessie Howe #00.

The 2nd Pro Stock came out with the field inverted putting Scott Brooks #66 and Phil Meaney #5MA on the front row. Brooks and Aric Blanchette #99 would spin in turn 1 right at the start sending the rest of the pack scrambling to gather it up. On the restart "Rocket" Roger Raymond #62 would take the lead only to have snag it away one lap later. On lap 3 Adam LaPoint #46 spun in turn 4 to bring out the 2nd caution. Meaney led at the restart but on lap 6 Raymond ducked low coming out of turn 2 to take the top spot.

On lap 7 yellow would fly again as Gordon Rudolph #67 spun on the back chute. Raymond got the jump on the restart with Bill Kimball #43, Zig Geno #57 and Punky Caron 1G using the inside groove to follow him and send Meaney back to 5th. On lap 14 Geno made a slick move diving low to take over 2nd and challenge Raymond for the lead. On lap 24 Blanchette spun in turn 1 and on the restart a pile up on the back chute collected Geno, Caron and Rob Goodenough #1NH. Caron was cable to continue on while Geno and Goodenough went pit side for repairs. Raymond again led the pack on the restart but on lap 27 Kimball took the lead with Bucky Demers #26 right on his tail. On lap 31 Russ Hersey #88 got by Demers for 2nd and on lap 33 dove low in turn 2 to take away the lead from Kimball. On lap 34 Brooks spun in turn 2 collecting Geno who had returned and the yellow flew again.

On the restart it was Hersey, Demers and Bryon Baker #11 the top 3 and on lap 37 Baker took over 2nd and set his sights on Hersey. By lap 39 Kimball had moved up to 3rd and on lap 41 Caron bounced hard off the back chute wall then sliding through turn 3 and up on the bank almost rolling over before coming to a rest in a cloud of dust. Caron left the track via the hook but returned before the race restarted. When the green flew Hersey was in command with Kimball following him on the low side to put Baker back to 3rd. On lap 47 Baker dove under Kimball for 2nd but Kimball came down the track forcing Baker into the grass costing him several positions. As the checkers flew it was Hersey, Kimball, Bob MaCarthur, Demers, Rob Williams, Tom Canfield, Caron, Baker, Meaney and Raymond completing the top 10.

The Late Model field was 18 strong to take the green with George Frost Jr. #82 on the point and 4 time defending track champion Aaron Fellows #29 starting on the outside. The "Superman" (Fellows) wasted no time in showing the visitors how defend his home turf by taking the lead at the drop of the green. Frost rode in 2nd with "Lightning" Larry Riendeau #41 and "Pistol" Pete Jarvis #4 applying the pressure On lap 14 Josh Brousseau #81 spun in turn 4 bringing out the yellow and on the restart Fellows again drove away with Reindeau sliding into 2nd. On lap 19 fluid from the #6 of Joe Lanou sent Joe Tetrault #73 spinning into the wall on the front chute. Lanou was able to make repairs and continue but Tetrault was done for the event. Fellows was off and running again on the restart but the final caution would fly on lap 27 as LJ Perry #00 bounced hard off the front stretch wall. Over the final 3 laps Fellows was in total control on his way to victory with Reindeau and Jarvis a tight 2nd and 3rd.

The Final 25 laps for the Pro Stocks had everyone on the edge of their seats. Ruus Hersey came into the race with a 1 point lead over Bob MaCarthur, Bucky Demers and Punky Caron who were all tied for 2nd. With the field again inverted Gordon Rudolph #67 and Aric Blanchette #99 would bring the field to the green. On lap three Punky Caron #1G got into the back of Scott Brooks #66 coming out of turn 2 sending Brooks into the grass and causing several cars to limp away with damage. Track officials sent Caron to the rear while the crowd on hand roared their approval. On the restart the wily veteran "Rocket" Roger Raymond #62 took control and never looked back to lead the final 22 laps over Bryon Baker #11 and Hersey. Being a Monza style race the finishes were calculated up Russ Hersey was the overall winner with Bryon Baker 2nd and Punky Caron 3rd. In a very classy move while in victory lane Caron turned his winnings ($1,000 ) over to the Brousseau Family showing everyone that he wasn’t there for the money or the fame, he was just being Punky!

Final Results: Russ Hersey #88, Bryon Baker #11, Punky Caron #1G, Bucky Demers #26, Bill Kimball #43, Bob MaCarthur #55, Roger Raymond #62, Rob Goodenough #1NH, Tom Canfield #8NH, Jim Boniface #20, Phil Meaney #5MA, Rob Williams #71, Zig Geno #57, Aric Blanchette #99, Gordon Rudolph #67, Scott Brooks #66, Adam LaPoint #46, Bob Labine #72, Dick Lamotte Jr. #28, Josh Brousseau #81.

In the wild cat feature Dave "The Mailman" Aiken #33 won his 9th feature of the season and took home a six-foot tall trophy. Mandy Kehoe #26 came in an impressive second and rounding out the top five was Rob Leitch #72, Donald "Duck" Rogers #99 and Mike Rouleau #84.
