DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 10, 2003) - Todd Szegedy, the 2003 Featherlite Modified Series, NASCAR Touring Champion has returned home after a busy four days in New York City. Szegedy joined the eleven other 2003 NASCAR Champions in the Big Apple as the drivers met with the media, attended numerous photo shoots and were VIP guests at the Winston Cup Banquet at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
"I had a terrific time," said Szegedy. "We were treated like gold the entire time we were there. It makes you realize what an honor it is to be a NASCAR Champion."
Szegedy arrived in New York on Wednesday, Dec. 3. The following day he attended the NASCAR Winston Cup Banquet Press Conference. The Champions from the three National Series, including 2003 Winston Cup Champion Matt Kenseth, attended along with the eight regional Touring Champions and the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Champion. In addition, the entire Top-10 from the NASCAR Winston Cup Series 2003 standings were at the press conference.
"It was great opportunity to get to know a lot of these drivers, " said Szegedy. "And I realized how much they follow our series. I didn't even have a chance to introduce my fiancé to Tony Stewart. He just came over and said 'congratulations, I understand you just got engaged'."
Stewart had read that Szegedy asked his girlfriend Alexis to marry him just three weeks ago at the Featherlite Modified Series Banquet.
Szegedy also had the opportunity to preview the NASCAR IMAX movie that will be released to the general public in March.
"The preview was awesome," said Szegedy. "The fans definitely are going to want to see it when it comes out. I know I'm going to."
Szegedy joined all the NASCAR Champions for a dinner on Thursday night at the Waldorf. On Friday, he attended the annual Myers Breakfast, and then took part in the annual photo shoot featuring all of NASCAR's Champions. Friday night he attended the NASCAR Winston Cup Banquet and the Champions Party that went on into the wee hours of the morning.
"It really was an unforgettable experience," said Szegedy. "The opportunity to meet drivers from around the country and share stories was a tremendous experience. This was the highlight of winning the championship and I want to defend that championship in order to get back to New York."
